Last of the Responses

Below are the final responses to the July 18th check-in. I believe that I evaluated everyone, however, since I do not have a class list yet, please let me know if I missed any of your postings.

IF YOU WERE ASKED TO REVISE YOUR PLAN AND/OR ELABORATE/RESPOND TO SOMEONE ELSE'S POSTING, PLEASE DO SO BY WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 1ST.

I will also put up another posting entitled "LETS TALK" (I have been watching too much Fraiser this summer :) ) for additional questions and comments that you may have regarding the paper. This can be used as a general forum for the class. If you have specific questions for me, please feel free to email me directly.

Good luck and enjoy the rest of your summer.

RESPONSES:

Rose:
Good sources. Good plan of investigation…the format used for the first half of your plan is fine.

In regards to your questions, you are not only drawing your own conclusions for the paper, see the rubric and its description of what needs to be done for each subsection of the paper. Seven pages will fill up fast. Finally, I don’t believe that there was a question provided for that particular assignment.

Response to someone’s posting?

Carla:

I am glad to hear that you enjoyed reading Napoleon’s own point of view regarding his life.

As for your plan of investigation, it is too broad. The first half states that you will try to determine the “things that may have helped or caused Napoleon to become a failure”. First, was he a failure, and if so at what? Second, if you are going to choose that topic for your paper, and you should be careful that it does not get away from the general question in the paper’s directions, you should try to choose one specific cause for his downfall to discuss. Finally, be sure that you proof read when you post on the blog. Your plan of investigation is on the right track, but a rough draft at best.

You can use other sources, but they should not be the focus of your paper. You can tweak your topic, but not change it completely. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Can you expand upon your response to Katie?

Dan M:

First, congrats on your AP score. News travels fast even in the summer…

Your first source, while very interesting, might not be enough for the paper. Try to use this as an ADDITIONAL source, and pick another book that focuses on Napoleon specifically.

Great plan of investigation. Run with it.

Responses: Yes, there was no Congress to block Napoleon, but isn’t that because he made himself the ruler of France?

Brittany T:

Nice review of your sources. I understand where you are going with your plan of investigation, but I think that you need to rephrase your question so that it is more specific. Other than that your plan to research how European governments and civilizations were impacted by Napoleon sounds good. Again, you might want to, after more research, narrow this idea down even further to make it your own. Go beyond the general question that I posed to you in the directions. It was just to get you thinking.

See my response to Adrya in order to answer your first question, and hopefully my response above answers your second question.

Theresa:

Your response to question one is an example of how everyone’s posting should be! Great details…Well thought out…Concise and to the point.

Ditto for your plan of investigation. You took the generalized question that I gave to you in the directions, and came up with a topic to research that is all your own. Can’t wait to read your paper!

Questions:

The page/word length for the internal assessment applies to the summer assignment.
You can use other sources, but be careful of what you pull off of the internet that is not from questia.com (e.g. no wikipedia unless you are getting primary sources from it to incorporate into your paper).
Yes.
The section that you are referring to is ONLY a summary of the Internal Assessment. The directions for the summer assignment, in bold, states that you should take a minimum of twenty hours to complete (on your own).

I can understand your support for Ally’s comment regarding prior knowledge, but learn from Katie, if you are not familiar with a topic research even further. That is part of being an historian.

WELL DONE!

Sofia:

Your second source is fine; however, the first source looks at the wrong Napoleon. Sorry, I know that you liked that book more than the other one.

Find another book and email me your new plan of investigation.

Response to Questions: See the rubric for the set up of your essay. Could it be argued that Napoleon’s loss to Russia was the beginning of his demise, and that it was Waterloo that was the true end of his reign?
I look forward to reviewing your new plan of investigation.

Patrick:

Excellent sources for your plan of investigation. Like Theresa, your POI is original and well thought out. Go with it!

Questions: Not sure how to answer your question regarding the paragraphs. Each subsection is different from the rest. See the rubric for what is required under each one.

Nice response to Deogenes.

Josephine:

Your first source is fine, but the second one refers to the wrong Napoleon. Find another source, and email me a new plan of investigation.

Questions: It is alright for you to tweak your final plan of investigation, but I would not change the topic completely.

Alec:

Good sources. In regards to your plan of investigation, stick to the first half of your POI (“how Napoleon’s integration of Europe impacted the people of France and Europe”), as it will ultimately discuss Napoleon’s qualities.

Can you expand/support your responses to Deogenes and Tommara?

Merancia:

Your sources are fine, but you have at least three research topics in your plan of investigation. Remember, this is not a research paper, where you try to summarize EVERYTHING about a particular topic. Rather, you should choose a very specific, micro topic, perhaps something that no one else has thought to study before, and argue it in this paper. See Theresa and Patrick’s plans of investigation as examples.

Email me your new POI.

Questions: Yes you can use other sources, so long as the majority of your paper comes from the two sources found on questia.com.

I am going to refine my plan of investigation from domestic changes in general to just the Concordat. Thus, my plan of investigation will look like this: This investigation will try to examine how Napoleon’s power had an impact on France and Europe. In addressing this question, the discussion focuses on the domestic change of religion and how the Concordat had an impact on France and Europe. The analysis will try to identify how Napoleon influenced the change, and the impact that the change had on France and Europe through the evaluation of different historian’s views. Two sources, Napoleon: For and Against and Napoleon will be further evaluated.

And, to further my response to Katie's question of whether I believe Napoleon is like Hitler, or not I would say. I do feel that Napoleon is like Hitler because they were both dictators. They were both attracted to the idea of totalitarianism. This belief was a major help in causing both of their ultimate downfalls.
