Lets Talk

Good evening Seattle :)

This posting is set up for all of you listeners out there to ask questions and discuss how your research is going. Again, if you have any specific questions for me, you should email me directly. This is WIBO signing out...

Okay, I will stop.

Last of the Responses

Below are the final responses to the July 18th check-in. I believe that I evaluated everyone, however, since I do not have a class list yet, please let me know if I missed any of your postings.

IF YOU WERE ASKED TO REVISE YOUR PLAN AND/OR ELABORATE/RESPOND TO SOMEONE ELSE'S POSTING, PLEASE DO SO BY WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 1ST.

I will also put up another posting entitled "LETS TALK" (I have been watching too much Fraiser this summer :) ) for additional questions and comments that you may have regarding the paper. This can be used as a general forum for the class. If you have specific questions for me, please feel free to email me directly.

Good luck and enjoy the rest of your summer.

RESPONSES:

Rose:
Good sources. Good plan of investigation…the format used for the first half of your plan is fine.

In regards to your questions, you are not only drawing your own conclusions for the paper, see the rubric and its description of what needs to be done for each subsection of the paper. Seven pages will fill up fast. Finally, I don’t believe that there was a question provided for that particular assignment.

Response to someone’s posting?

Carla:

I am glad to hear that you enjoyed reading Napoleon’s own point of view regarding his life.

As for your plan of investigation, it is too broad. The first half states that you will try to determine the “things that may have helped or caused Napoleon to become a failure”. First, was he a failure, and if so at what? Second, if you are going to choose that topic for your paper, and you should be careful that it does not get away from the general question in the paper’s directions, you should try to choose one specific cause for his downfall to discuss. Finally, be sure that you proof read when you post on the blog. Your plan of investigation is on the right track, but a rough draft at best.

You can use other sources, but they should not be the focus of your paper. You can tweak your topic, but not change it completely. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Can you expand upon your response to Katie?

Dan M:

First, congrats on your AP score. News travels fast even in the summer…

Your first source, while very interesting, might not be enough for the paper. Try to use this as an ADDITIONAL source, and pick another book that focuses on Napoleon specifically.

Great plan of investigation. Run with it.

Responses: Yes, there was no Congress to block Napoleon, but isn’t that because he made himself the ruler of France?

Brittany T:

Nice review of your sources. I understand where you are going with your plan of investigation, but I think that you need to rephrase your question so that it is more specific. Other than that your plan to research how European governments and civilizations were impacted by Napoleon sounds good. Again, you might want to, after more research, narrow this idea down even further to make it your own. Go beyond the general question that I posed to you in the directions. It was just to get you thinking.

See my response to Adrya in order to answer your first question, and hopefully my response above answers your second question.

Theresa:

Your response to question one is an example of how everyone’s posting should be! Great details…Well thought out…Concise and to the point.

Ditto for your plan of investigation. You took the generalized question that I gave to you in the directions, and came up with a topic to research that is all your own. Can’t wait to read your paper!

Questions:

The page/word length for the internal assessment applies to the summer assignment.
You can use other sources, but be careful of what you pull off of the internet that is not from questia.com (e.g. no wikipedia unless you are getting primary sources from it to incorporate into your paper).
Yes.
The section that you are referring to is ONLY a summary of the Internal Assessment. The directions for the summer assignment, in bold, states that you should take a minimum of twenty hours to complete (on your own).

I can understand your support for Ally’s comment regarding prior knowledge, but learn from Katie, if you are not familiar with a topic research even further. That is part of being an historian.

WELL DONE!

Sofia:

Your second source is fine; however, the first source looks at the wrong Napoleon. Sorry, I know that you liked that book more than the other one.

Find another book and email me your new plan of investigation.

Response to Questions: See the rubric for the set up of your essay. Could it be argued that Napoleon’s loss to Russia was the beginning of his demise, and that it was Waterloo that was the true end of his reign?
I look forward to reviewing your new plan of investigation.

Patrick:

Excellent sources for your plan of investigation. Like Theresa, your POI is original and well thought out. Go with it!

Questions: Not sure how to answer your question regarding the paragraphs. Each subsection is different from the rest. See the rubric for what is required under each one.

Nice response to Deogenes.

Josephine:

Your first source is fine, but the second one refers to the wrong Napoleon. Find another source, and email me a new plan of investigation.

Questions: It is alright for you to tweak your final plan of investigation, but I would not change the topic completely.

Alec:

Good sources. In regards to your plan of investigation, stick to the first half of your POI (“how Napoleon’s integration of Europe impacted the people of France and Europe”), as it will ultimately discuss Napoleon’s qualities.

Can you expand/support your responses to Deogenes and Tommara?

Merancia:

Your sources are fine, but you have at least three research topics in your plan of investigation. Remember, this is not a research paper, where you try to summarize EVERYTHING about a particular topic. Rather, you should choose a very specific, micro topic, perhaps something that no one else has thought to study before, and argue it in this paper. See Theresa and Patrick’s plans of investigation as examples.

Email me your new POI.

Questions: Yes you can use other sources, so long as the majority of your paper comes from the two sources found on questia.com.

Responses Continued

Raymond:

Great plan of investigation! Go with it.

In regards to your questions, you are not limited to the two sources; however, the majority of your paper should be based on them. See the summary of the internal assessment found on page two of the packet for page requirements.

Delande:

Great sources, especially the latter… Your plan of investigation sounds good, but I fear that it my still be too broad.

You can include Egypt and military contributions in the paper, but be careful not to get off track. One way to include extra information into a paper without getting off topic is through the footnotes.

Can you elaborate on your response to Katie? Why do you think Napoleon and Hitler are similar in some ways?

Adrya:

I think that the last part of your plan of investigation should be your focus for this paper (e.g. what impact did the Napoleonic Code have on France and Europe after Napoleon was gone?). However, it sounds as if the sources you chose may not be suitable for this, since they focus on Napoleon’s life during the French Revolution, and not his spent as ruler of France. Reevaluate your sources and let me know what you think.

In response to your questions: A. Provide enough background information about Napoleon, AND YOUR TOPIC, so that the reader has a general understanding of it. Remember, this is not a research paper on his life. You are choosing something about Napoleon that is of interest to you, perhaps something that no other historian has ever thought to study, and presenting your argument in this paper. B. Not sure about this one… The footnotes ARE based on the bibliography, and you will use the footnotes format for this paper. I believe that they are using the Chicago Manuel Style of Writing, also known as Turabian. Check it out online.

Alyssa:

I really enjoyed your analysis of the two books you picked. It is amazing how two people, historians, can view history differently.

Your plan of investigation sounds really interesting. Perhaps you could find another source(s) that shows Britain’s perspective.
In response to your question, you should probably stick with the plan of investigation that you have, although I understand that it may be tweaked a bit based on what you find during your research.

Can you expand upon your response to Katie?

Ally:

This is a good start to your plan of investigation. Just make sure that your paper does not turn into an essay that simply summarizes the different social changes Napoleon made when he came to power. Be sure to make a strong comparison to what he did, and what revolutionary France was fighting for. After all, you said it yourself; it can be argued that Napoleon was a self imposed king/dictator.

Deogenes:

I like your sources, as they show that there are always two sides to every story. It sounds as if your first source glorifies Napoleon, and the second source takes a much more unbiased approach to his life.

Your plan of investigation is interesting. Be careful when you say that it was once believed that Napoleon was all-knowing, because if you asked someone from England or another part of Europe, for instance, if this were true you might find a very different answer. In other words, don’t get caught over generalizing.

With that said, I do like that in your plan of investigation you are trying to find whether or not this theory is true. Stick with that and you should be fine (perhaps you can make it even more concise than that after completing further research).

Do you have a response to another posting?

Tommara:

It sounds like you have two plans of investigation going on: the first being your discussion on Napoleon’s true intentions for ruling France, and the second being did his rule help or hurt France/Europe. I would stick with the former. History has often credited Napoleon for the social reforms that he made when he rose to power, but why did he make them? Was he truly concerned about the people of his country, or did he create these changes to establish his rule?

In Response to the Check-In

Hello All,

After looking at your responses in more detail, I just wanted to say again what a great job everyone is doing with this assignment. I realize the amount of time that is needed for this assignment, and I think that it will be worth it, as it gives you a sense of what type of work you will be doing next year.

I have started to respond to your check-ins. The will be completed in the order in which they were posted. I will also try to do a few each day until they are all done, so check the blog often for my responses. Grades will be given to you when we return to school in September.

Mr. Owens

RESPONSES:

Katie:

Great topic for your paper, just make sure that you cover the requirements from the directions. How much does Geyl go into Hitler? You might want to refine your topic even more. For instance when you say that you will discuss their “tactics or deeds”, be sure to choose something specific about Napoleon and Hitler to discuss, rather than making your paper broad.

Courtney:

Great sources and a well thought out plan of investigation, although you might want to refine the topic to one specific domestic policy that influenced the rest of Europe! For part three of your check-in, could you explain why you agree that there are similarities found in Napoleon and Hitler? Well done.

Madie:

I am glad that you are enjoying “The French Revolution”. In response to your plan of investigation and part three of your check in, I would say that while you should provide some background detail about Napoleon and your topic, you want to keep the majority of your paper focused on one specific issue.

For instance, I think that your plan of investigation is well thought out, however, you should pick a specific topic surrounding Napoleon’s rule and its impact on Europe. Otherwise you can write a book on the subject!

Great sources!

Romelie:

I think that your topic is on the right track as you can explore the economic sanctions that Napoleon tried to impose on England, but you need to make sure that you focus on Napoleon I. Napoleon III was third emperor of France and the last monarch for the country.

As for your questions: 1. You can use other sources for you paper, however, you should try to stick to sources found on questia, and the MAJORITY of your paper should be based on the two books. 2. You can not complete Part B. Supporting Evidence in bullet point format. Stick to the format used in the sample. Yes, Supporting Evidence shows that you adequately researched your investigation and the evidence you provide is correctly referenced using footnotes (which are a form of citations). 3. The scores that you see are the rubric. Read through it to see what you will be evaluated on. 4. I am not sure what you mean by a question. The question that I posed to you for the assignment is in the directions. It is your job to research Napoleon and develop your own topic for the paper. Let me know if you have any more questions... I know you will :)

Jake:

I think that you already realize that the sources you have chosen are limited. Both books appear to be very broad in nature, dealing with all or the majority of France’s history. You should be able to use the majority of each book, rather than small sections. Also, the materials used from your second source refer to Napoleon III, not Napoleon I.

I would go back and try to find two sources that are not as broad as the sources mentioned above. Try to find two sources that have differing opinions on Napoleon I, and that do not focus so much on the French Revolution. These sources should have different opinions of Napoleon. After all, IBO is about learning history from all different perspectives, and then deciding for yourself what actually happened (rather than someone simply telling you). Find the inner historian in you :)

In regards to your plan of investigation, I think that you have some good ideas. However, you will obviously have to go back and change this a bit, as your first plan is based on Napoleon III and sources that are too broad. I also think that you should try to narrow down your plan to one topic or the other, and, once you do that, narrow it down even more. Email me when you come up with a new plan.

Finally, can you explain what you mean when you responded to Katie in saying that Napoleon and Hitler can and cannot be compared to each other, and that they both conquered Europe for different reasons?

Good luck!

Hello Everyone,

Your responses look great! I can tell that you are all putting a lot of effort into the summer assignment. I also saw that many of you had questions regarding the assignment posted on the blog, and I will try to answer those for you as soon as possible. Also, if there is anyone else in the class that thinks they could answer a question posted on the blog, feel free to do so.

Again, great job on the check in. Keep up the good work!

Trouble Logging On to Questia.com and Using Hard Copies

First, I apologize to those of you who have been kicked off of the website. Questia should allow more than one person to be logged on at the same time. I think that problems might occur when the majority of the class is trying to use the site at the same time. Again, my apologies...

Also, Someone had asked me if they could use hard copies of the books that are found on questia, or do they have to read it on line. The answer: Yes, of course you can get a hard copy of the books that you choose from questia.com. JUST MAKE SURE THAT THE BOOKS YOU ARE CHOOSING TO GET HARD COPIES OF, CAN BE FOUND ON QUESTIA.COM.
