The Great War Goes to Hollywood: Extra Credit Assignment



Introduction:

The twentieth century is the best documented century in world history, primarily because so much of it has been capture on film. Much of what people think they know about the past has actually been shaped by the films and television they watch.

This assignment encourages you to view a historically-themed film on the Great War, and to come away with a greater sense of how the film has shaped our commonly held beliefs about the past.

You will view one of the two films below and complete the following:[1]


Films:

All Quiet on the Western Front (German, 1930)

Joyeux Noel [Merry Christmas] (French, 2005)


Essay Assignment:

Your paper should follow the structure below. However, you should not feel constrained by this format either. Feel free to add other types of analysis, information, and observations.

3-4 page essay

A. Introduction

Background info on the film and director
Setting; Plot

B. Connection to History

The time period, events, etc. that the film is related to
Summary of the story
To what extent was the film a good representation of the past?

C. Agenda, Values, Effects

What values underlie the film?
What does the filmmaker do to influence feelings and emotions?
What sort of heroic and villainous icons are presented and supported in the film?
What messages did the filmmakers wish to convey?
Does the film succeed in producing the desired effect?

D. Conclusion
