WWI Footage and Extra Credit Assignment
INTRODUCTION:
As mentioned several times in our recent discussions, twentieth century warfare is some of the best documented in all of history. While this was just begining to occur in World War One, excellent footage can still be found of the major events, battlefield conditions, technologies and tactics, and most importantly the impact that it had on those involved.

ASSIGNMENT: Charlie Chaplin in Shoulder Arms
By the middle of the war the most popular medium for propaganda was film. Movies showed a country's enemy as horrible or ridiculous, often presenting their own soldiers as noble and brave. While both sides created these types of films, one of the most famous was on the Allied side. Charlie Chaplin's film, Shoulder Arms, focused on the difficulties of basic training for Americans, and the incompetencies of the Germans and their kaiser.
QUESTIONS:

The Great War Goes to Hollywood: Extra Credit Assignment
Introduction:
The twentieth century is the best documented century in world history, primarily because so much of it has been capture on film. Much of what people think they know about the past has actually been shaped by the films and television they watch.
This assignment encourages you to view a historically-themed film on the Great War, and to come away with a greater sense of how the film has shaped our commonly held beliefs about the past.
You will view one of the two films below and complete the following:[1]
Films:
All Quiet on the Western Front (German, 1930)
Joyeux Noel [Merry Christmas] (French, 2005)
Essay Assignment:
Your paper should follow the structure below. However, you should not feel constrained by this format either. Feel free to add other types of analysis, information, and observations.
3-4 page essay
A. Introduction
Background info on the film and director
Setting; Plot
B. Connection to History
The time period, events, etc. that the film is related to
Summary of the story
To what extent was the film a good representation of the past?
C. Agenda, Values, Effects
What values underlie the film?
What does the filmmaker do to influence feelings and emotions?
What sort of heroic and villainous icons are presented and supported in the film?
What messages did the filmmakers wish to convey?
Does the film succeed in producing the desired effect?
D. Conclusion

Napleon Exhibit at the MFA
Here is an extra credit assignment that I think everyone would enjoy.
The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston is hosting "Symbols of Power: Napoleon and the Art of the Empire Style, 1800-1815. (October 21-January 27)

This is a great opportunity for you to see some wonderful primary sources, like the famous painting, Ingres', "Napoleon I on His Imperial Throne", which we analyzed together in class. Other examples of primary sources from the empire include: Napoleon's throne, sword, and an elegant dress worn by Josephine herself.
THE ASSIGNMENT:
1. Visit the exhibit at the MFA. Go with friends from class, family, or your imaginary friend...I have one :)
2. After viewing the entire exhibit, choose one of the objects in the collection to analyze for its OPVL. REMEMBER TO EVALUATE IT AS AN HISTORICAL SOURCE, KEEPING IN MIND THE THEME OF THE EXHIBIT: SYMBOLS OF POWER.
If you are going with your fellow classmates, please make sure that your work is your own. This is not a collaborative assignment!
3. Write a 750 word essay that discusses the following:
a. An introduction to the exhibit, as well as the artist and object that you chose to analyze.
b. Your analysis of one of the exhibit's works, based on its ORIGIN, PURPOSE, VALUE, and LIMITATIONS as a symbol of the power Napoleon tried to create as emperor of France.
c. Why, when Napoleon declared himself emperor of France in 1804, do YOU think he put skilled artisans to work, creating this lavish imperial style and the objects that are in the exhibit?
d. Your experiences getting to/and at the MFA. Did you enjoy the exhibit? Why/Why not?
USING THE CHICAGO STYLE FORMAT, YOUR ESSAY SHOULD INCLUDE FOOTNOTES AND A BIBLIOGRAPHY.

In regards to your questions, you are not only drawing your own conclusions for the paper, see the rubric and its description of what needs to be done for each subsection of the paper. Seven pages will fill up fast. Finally, I don’t believe that there was a question provided for that particular assignment.

I am glad to hear that you enjoyed reading Napoleon’s own point of view regarding his life.
As for your plan of investigation, it is too broad. The first half states that you will try to determine the “things that may have helped or caused Napoleon to become a failure”. First, was he a failure, and if so at what? Second, if you are going to choose that topic for your paper, and you should be careful that it does not get away from the general question in the paper’s directions, you should try to choose one specific cause for his downfall to discuss. Finally, be sure that you proof read when you post on the blog. Your plan of investigation is on the right track, but a rough draft at best.
You can use other sources, but they should not be the focus of your paper. You can tweak your topic, but not change it completely. Let me know if you have any more questions.

Your first source, while very interesting, might not be enough for the paper. Try to use this as an ADDITIONAL source, and pick another book that focuses on Napoleon specifically.

Nice review of your sources. I understand where you are going with your plan of investigation, but I think that you need to rephrase your question so that it is more specific. Other than that your plan to research how European governments and civilizations were impacted by Napoleon sounds good. Again, you might want to, after more research, narrow this idea down even further to make it your own. Go beyond the general question that I posed to you in the directions. It was just to get you thinking.

I can understand your support for Ally’s comment regarding prior knowledge, but learn from Katie, if you are not familiar with a topic research even further. That is part of being an historian.
